How did you decide upon a career in cybersecurity?
I have been working for an information technology consulting organization for 27 years. They gave me many opportunities to expand my technical knowledge as a systems engineer. Over the past several years, I have been very interested in growing my skill set in cybersecurity. I came to discover that I have a passion for security – therefore, I took the bull by the horns and ran with it.
Why did you get your SSCP®?
I wanted to add security credentials to my portfolio. I currently hold the SSCP, VCP6, ITIL, Microsoft, Cisco, and Storage solution certifications. All of these certifications are relevant to my current job responsibilities. I support many customers with security and infrastructure solutions. The knowledge that I have gained from my SSCP training has enhanced my capabilities in the cybersecurity space. I enjoy sharing my experiences and knowledge with our customers.
What is a typical day like for you?
My days vary greatly and I generally work on multiple projects at the same time, including security vulnerability assessments, security awareness programs for our customers, policies and procedures, marketing collateral, technical pre-sales, and project management. I make time to attend training webinars and conferences and also assist with growing our security practice business.
Can you tell us about a personal career highlight?
I am very proud of my learning capabilities in all areas under my responsibility. Every day is a learning experience. One particular highlight is having the ability to engage customers in security conversations about their current exposure. I am able to recommend solutions designed specifically for them and can become their trusted advisor.
How has the SSCP certification helped you in your career?
The knowledge and skills that I gained through the SSCP training program have enhanced my ability to better serve our customer base. Understanding the different domains, and how to incorporate them into everyday information security, has been a tremendous benefit. The SSCP certification has inspired me to work towards my next set of goals of gaining CCSK (Certificate of Cloud Security Knowledge) and CCSP (Certified Cloud Security Professional) certifications.
What is the most useful advice you have for other information security professionals?
I would recommend seeking training and certification in cloud security. As more and more organizations are moving to the cloud, whether it be their entire infrastructure or a hybrid model, security challenges will be a concern and focus point for many organizations.
