APACS, the UK banking industry body, has published "don't panic" advice for the 25 million Brits whose personal data was lost by the Royal Mail, en route between HMRC (Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs) and NAO (the National Audit Office) on two CD-ROMs. APACS reassures banking customers that "there is no evidence that the data has fallen into criminal hands nor that any fraud has been attempted as a result of this incident" and generally down-plays the risks of identity theft.
